When Should One Recite the Traveler's Prayer?

AA

Question

Hello esteemed Rabbi,

When should one recite the Traveler's Prayer?
Does a round trip combine to obligate one in the Traveler's Prayer?

Thank you

Answer

Dear Sir,

According to the custom of the Sephardim, if one travels for at least 72 minutes from city to city, one should recite the Traveler's Prayer, and a round trip counts towards this. In contrast, the Ashkenazi custom measures the obligation of the Traveler's Prayer by distance rather than time, and if one travels a distance of 3.840 km from city to city, one must recite the Traveler's Prayer.

Sources: For the Sephardic custom, see the responsa Yabia Omer, Part 1 (Orach Chaim 13) and the book Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, Yalkut Yosef (Section 191, Paragraph 2). For the Ashkenazic custom, see the responsa Shevet Halevi, Part 10 (Section 21, Note 2) and the book Halichot Shlomo, Part 1 (Chapter 21, Halacha 7).

Blessings,

Hillel Meirs
