Is it permissible to operate a radio on the quiet wave or a television for emergency situations on Shabbat?

AA

Question

Hello, I live in Ashkelon, and due to the frightening security situation, I wanted to ask if it is permissible to set a radio to a quiet station? And if there is no radio, can I use a television on the quiet wave and cover it with a sheet?

Answer

Hello and blessings

It is permissible to set a radio to the quiet wave; if there is no radio, one should turn on the television at a low volume and cover it with a blanket so that the announcer cannot be heard too loudly. In an emergency, one may uncover the television, and once the emergency situation is over, cover it again.

Wishing all residents of the south a joyful and peaceful Shabbat, with Hashem's help.

P.S. For the benefit of residents in the south,

A quiet wave at frequency 531 A.M. will broadcast emergency messages by the Home Front Command as needed.
