The Name Rumi for My Daughter
Question
Shalom, honored Rabbi,
I am about to give birth to a daughter. I intend to give her two names. The second name will be Esther, after my mother-in-law. The first name is Rumi. I truly love the name and feel a connection to it. It is hard for me to think of another name. The intention behind the name is not, God forbid, a reference to the kingdom of Rome. Rather, Rumi comes from the word *rum*, which means elevation, upliftment, and heavenly kingship. As described in the Book of Habakkuk, Chapter 3, Verse 10: "The deep gave forth its voice; it lifted up its hands." The addition of the letter yud describes the connection to the word *rum*, meaning "my height." This is the interpretation I found for the name, and I feel a strong connection to it. I would appreciate it if the Rabbi would offer his blessing and recommendation for the name. I would also be happy to hear the Rabbi's opinion. Thank you very much, and have a good week.
Answer
Shalom Rav,
It is difficult to recommend the name Rumi even according to the interpretation you intend.
In my opinion, it would be better for you to find another name that is more fitting for your daughter.
We would be happy to assist further, if needed.
