Do I need to separate challah from dough meant for frying?

AA

Question

Do I need to separate challah and recite all the blessings when I am making dough that is ultimately meant to be fried? Thank you very much for your help.

Answer

Greetings,

According to the custom of Sephardim, when frying the dough, there is no need to separate challah (Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De'ah, Siman 370, Se'if 3, and Hilchot Olam, Part 5, page 274). However, according to the Ashkenazi custom, it is appropriate to separate challah without a blessing (see Shach, Se'if 34, and P'tach Teshuvah, Se'if 1, in the name of Panim Me'iros).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
