Laws of the Fast of Gedaliah
Question
What are the prohibitions during the Fast of Gedaliah aside from the prohibition of eating? Is it permissible to shower or brush one’s teeth?
Answer
According to the letter of the law, one is permitted to shower; however, the poskim state that it is advisable for one with a sensitive soul to refrain from washing.
Brushing teeth is prohibited during a public fast, but in a situation of discomfort, rinsing the mouth with water is permitted, provided one is careful to bend their head and mouth downward so that the water does not enter their throat.
