How to Create Lavud in a Sukkah with Walls Made of Sheets

AA

Question

Shalom, honorable rabbi, how does one create lavud in a sukkah whose walls are made of sheets??

Answer

Shalom u'vrakhah

"Lavud":

According to the principle of "lavud," one may use rods made of rigid material, or even iron wire (of substantial thickness), positioned as strips (horizontally) with gaps not exceeding 23 cm between them. The top edge of the upper rod should not be lower than 82 cm from the ground. The rods must be securely connected to the posts (on the right and left) in a fixed and durable manner (that does not detach in the wind).

In simple terms:

If the width of the rod (from the ground upwards) is 2 cm (for example), the rods should be positioned as follows:

1. First rod - the bottom of the first rod at a height of 23 cm from the ground.
2. Second rod - the bottom of the second rod at a height of 48 cm from the ground (cumulative height 50 cm).
3. Third rod - the bottom of the third rod at a height of 73 cm from the ground (cumulative height 75 cm).
4. Fourth rod - the bottom of the fourth rod at a height of 80 cm from the ground (cumulative height 80 cm).

[To suffice with three rods, the width of the rod (from the floor upwards) must be at least 4.5 cm, and then the first rod would be placed at a height of 23 cm, the second at a height of 50.5 cm (from the floor), and the third at a height of 78 cm (from the floor), thus with the addition of the width of the rod itself, we reach a height of 82 cm (which is ten tefachim).]
