Disqualifying the Sukkah Before Simchat Torah
Question
What is the ruling regarding disqualifying the sukkah before Simchat Torah? How should we disqualify it, and why? Thank you
Answer
Greetings,
Only if one intends to use the sukkah on Simchat Torah for eating and drinking should the sukkah be disqualified on the eve of Simchat Torah by creating an opening in the schach (roofing material) measuring four tefachim by four tefachim (approximately 32 cm by 32 cm) so that it is clear that he is sitting there not for the mitzvah of the sukkah—so it does not appear that he is adding to the mitzvot.
Sources: See Shulchan Aruch (Siman 672) and Mishnah Berurah there.
