The Order of Eating Symbolic Foods on Rosh Hashanah Nights
Question
Hello, esteemed rabbi. I would like to know what should be placed on the Rosh Hashanah table. Are there specific foods?
Answer
Hello and blessings,
On the nights of Rosh Hashanah, we eat "simanim" (symbolic foods), which are foods that have names or forms that represent a good sign for the new year. Before consuming them, we recite appropriate requests related to the names or shapes of the foods, as indicated in the siddur (prayer book).
And here is the order of eating:
1. Dates.
2. Rubia – seeds of green beans without the pod.
3. Karti – green leaves, also called leeks.
4. Silka – beetroot.
5. Kara – gourd.
6. Sweet pomegranate.
7. Apple dipped in honey.
8. A head of a ram – if this is not possible, we bring the head of a chicken or fish to the table (and do not eat it, as there are many worms in them), along with lamb meat.
Blessings,
