Prayer Order for Women on Yom Kippur

AA

Question

Hello, as someone who is gradually becoming more observant and is not yet familiar with the customs and laws, I would like to know what I should do and how I should behave on Yom Kippur as a woman. What should I pray, and how can I obtain a suitable prayer book with appropriate prayers? Currently, the commandments I observe include the morning prayer of Modeh Ani, the washing of hands, the morning blessings (Birkot Hashachar), and the Amidah prayer in the morning. I also light Shabbat candles and make Kiddush on Shabbat (I am a single mother and divorced), and I would like to know if any of these practices are incorrect. I have tried to find information online. Thank you for your assistance. Shavit

Answer

Hello and blessings,

There is no obligation for a woman to pray on Yom Kippur except for one prayer of Yom Kippur. However, it is certainly highly commendable to pray all the prayers of Yom Kippur.

On Yom Kippur, the Amidah prayer has a special text, and there are special prayer books – machzorim for the prayers of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur available in bookstores where you will find all the prayers. We would be happy to guide you after you purchase the machzor if you would like; please send us your phone number and we will get back to you.

With blessings,

Benjamin Shmueli
