Is it Permitted to Use Perfume on Yom Kippur?

AA

Question

Hello esteemed Rabbi, is it allowed to wear perfume/deodorant on Yom Kippur? Thank you very much.

Answer

Dear Sir,

It is forbidden to apply perfume/deodorant on the body on Yom Kippur due to the prohibition of anointing (see Responsa Shemesh U'Magen Part 3, Section 56, Paragraph 2, and Responsa Machazeh Eliyahu Part 2, Section 52, Paragraph 37). Additionally, one should not apply it to clothing due to the prohibition of creating a fragrance (see Responsa Yabia Omer Part 6, Section 46).

Gmar Chatima Tova,

Hillel Meirs
