Prayer and Blessings
Is it permissible to recite Avinu Malkeinu individually?
Question
Can an individual say Avinu Malkeinu? Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings,
It is permissible to say Avinu Malkeinu, even individually.
Sources: This is indeed written in the responsa of Shevet Yaakov, Part 3 (Siman 42), and regarding the recitation of Avinu Malkeinu by an individual, I do not understand why it should not be said by an individual, as the essence of prayer is the prayer of the individual, and this is clearly explained in the response of the Rivas (Siman 821). It is also stated in Kitzur Shnei Luchot HaBrit in the name of the great authorities that it should be said individually. Furthermore, the Elyah Rabbah (Siman 185, Sif 5) and the Mateh Ephraim (there, Sif 14) ruled similarly. This is also discussed in Hazon Ovadiah, Yaimim Noraim (page 203). Additionally, see further in Elyah Rabbah there, where he wrote, and for one who does not have the custom (to recite Avinu Malkeinu individually) one may find support from what is stated in the Gemara (Ta'anit 25b) that Rabbi Akiva descended before the Ark and said Avinu Malkeinu.
