What Blessing is Recited on Bourekas?
Question
May it be for good, greetings esteemed Rabbi, one of my classmates says that one must wash their hands and recite HaMotzi over bourekas, but I say that it is Mezonot, so I wanted to know what the proper blessing for bourekas is. Thank you
Answer
Greetings,
For the bourekas that are commonly found today, the blessing is Mezonot. However, if one has a meal with them, meaning they eat an amount of 216 grams or more (and it is good to be stringent and eat at least 230 grams), their status is like bread, and one should wash their hands, recite HaMotzi, and then recite Birkat HaMazon (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 168:6, Yalkut Yosef there 168:8).
Best regards,
