What Blessing Is Said on Soup with Noodles?

AA

Question

What blessing is recited on vegetable or legume soup that is cooked together with noodles? And what blessing should be said if one adds shakdei marak? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings,

1. If the noodles are in a significant and considerable quantity, even if the soup is the majority, one should recite the blessing of mezonot on the noodles, and this blessing also covers the soup.

However, if the noodles are very few, and the main intention is to drink the soup, one must first bless the noodles with mezonot and then bless the vegetables with the ha'adamah blessing (as explained in Mishnah Berurah 208:13 and in Chazon Ovadia on blessings, page 166, that for soup cooked with vegetables, one should bless ha'adamah, and this blessing covers the soup).

In such a case, it is proper to eat or drink something beforehand that also requires the ha'adamah blessing and intend to exempt the soup (see Chazon Ovadia there and Halacha Berurah 208:11).

2. If shakdei marak were added to the soup, the same law applies as with soup containing noodles, as mentioned above.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
