Is it permissible to bake dairy foods in a meat oven?

AA

Question

Hello esteemed Rabbi,
In our home, we have only one oven that is used for baking meat dishes.
We would like to bake dairy foods in that oven as well. Is this permissible from a kosher perspective? If so, under what conditions?
Thank you very much

Answer

Greetings,

According to the custom of the Sephardim, you may bake dairy foods like cakes (and other dry foods) in the meat oven provided that three conditions are met:

A. Twenty-four hours must pass since the last time you baked meat in the oven.

B. You must use special trays designated for dairy foods.

C. Before baking, the oven should be turned on to a high temperature for twenty minutes to completely remove any residue left from the meat dishes (Yabia Omer, part 5, Yoreh De'ah, section 7).

According to the custom of the Ashkenazim, it is not permitted to bake meat and dairy in the same oven one after the other, even if the above conditions are met (Chelkat Yaakov, Yoreh De'ah, section 23).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
