Is a Minyan Required to Recite the Sheva Brachot?

AA

Question

Is a minyan necessary for the Sheva Brachot? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings,

In order to recite the Sheva Brachot, there must be ten individuals above the age of Bar Mitzvah, and the groom himself counts towards the minyan. However, the blessing "Asher Bara" can be recited even if there are only three individuals above the age of Bar Mitzvah.

Sources: See Shulchan Aruch Even HaEzer (Siman 62, Seif 4) which states that the wedding blessings may only be recited with ten adults and the groom included in the count. Yet, when reciting after the Birkat Hamazon (Grace After Meals), only the blessing "Asher Bara" requires no minyan. The Rema writes: Nevertheless, three are necessary. Although the Taz (Skur 2) wrote in the name of the Maharal of Prague that he ruled that "Asher Bara" also should require ten, the consensus of most later authorities is that three is sufficient, as noted in the Chelkat Mechokek (Skur 5), Chochmat Adam (Klal 229, Skur 6), and Aruch HaShulchan (Seif 17). The responsa Yabia Omer, Vol. 3 (Even HaEzer Siman 11, Note 9) indicates that this is the common custom. It is noted further that for practical purposes three adults are needed for the blessing "Asher Bara," and a minor does not count.

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
