I Made a Taharah Break About 10 Minutes After Sunset, Is It Valid?
Question
Hello esteemed Rabbi,
Today I performed a taharah break between twilight about 10 minutes after sunset. I was at work and did not have the opportunity. Is this considered a valid taharah break, and can I start counting clean days, or should I begin anew tomorrow?
I would appreciate your response. Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings,
According to the opinion of most poskim, in Israel, a taharah break after sunset is not effective. However, the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, of blessed memory, is that retroactively it is valid up to 13 and a half minutes after sunset. Therefore, if you follow his rulings, you can consider this taharah break valid. If not, you should start anew tomorrow.
Sources: In the book Talley Tohar (Chapter 5, Note 30), it is stated in the name of the Chut Shani, Rabbi Yisrael Eliashiv, Rabbi Shmuel Wosner, and Rabbi Batzalel Abba Shaul, of blessed memory, that in Israel one should not take a lenient view regarding a taharah break after sunset. See there. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's opinion can be found in his book Hilchot Olam Part 5 (Page 58).
Best regards,
Hillel Meirs
