Is the Soul of the Deceased Present in the Home for the Entire First Year?

AA

Question

Is it true that the soul of the deceased remains in the home for the entire first year? And are his children or wife prohibited from leaving the house because of this?

Answer

Greetings,

The soul does not remain in the house for the entire year of mourning. This is mentioned in the Zohar (Parashat Vayikra) and brought in Bereshit Chochmah (Shaar HaYirah, Chapter 12) that for seven days after death, the soul goes from its home to the grave and from the grave back to the home, mourning for the body, etc., and after seven days, the soul ascends to its place.

It is permitted for his wife and children to leave the house as usual.

Best wishes,

Hillel Meirs
