Choosing a Name for a Daughter

AA

Question

Hello,

About a week ago, we were blessed with a daughter.
Throughout the pregnancy until now, the only name I feel connected to is Ella.
The source of this connection is the plant world and the meaning of strength, which resonates with us greatly throughout the process of pregnancy and childbirth.

I am aware that the name appears in the Bible as a male name associated with wickedness, but that is not our intent in giving the name.

I would appreciate your opinion.

Answer

Greetings,

It is indeed not really recommended to name a daughter "Ella." Perhaps you could consider the name "Ayala," which is similar and is not only a good name but also associated with longevity (as stated in the book of customs of the Rishon LeTziyon, part 1, page 298, where Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l recommended the name "Ayala," saying it has a merit for long life, and this is also well-known from Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky shlit"a. Furthermore, it was brought in the book Yeshuot Mordechai, page 118, from Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu zt"l that the name Ayala is good for girls).

We would be happy to assist you further.

With best wishes for congratulations and much joy,

Hillel Meirs
