Halachot and Customs
Hair Coloring During a Year of Mourning
Question
Hello, is it permissible during the first year of mourning for one of the parents to use hair dye to cover gray hair prematurely? Please refer to the customs of Sephardim. Thank you.
Answer
Hello,
I do not know if the question was asked by a man or a woman. A man is prohibited from coloring his hair at any time and under any circumstances [even outside of mourning], and especially when the dyeing is done to cover gray hair prematurely, as this constitutes a serious prohibition from the Torah of a man not wearing women's garments, and he would receive lashes, even for dyeing one hair from white to black, as stated by the Rambam and in the Shulchan Aruch. The fact that many men currently practice this does not help the matter at all. If the question was asked by a woman, the answer is that a married woman or a girl of marriageable age is permitted to do all the necessary actions to enhance her appearance, including dyeing gray hair.
