Boiling Water on Shabbat on a Hot Plate
Question
Hello, I follow the approach of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, may his memory be a blessing. I wanted to confirm whether it is indeed permissible to place a pot of water on a cold hot plate on Shabbat, which is set to turn on with a Shabbat timer. Is this allowed? Furthermore, if it is permitted, can I return the pot of boiling water to the hot plate after pouring some into a drinking cup? Given this, would the pot placed on the hot plate be considered a second vessel?
Answer
Hello and blessings,
Only water that has been boiled once on Friday may be placed on a cold hot plate that will be activated by a Shabbat timer. Once the water is hot, it is permissible to remove it and return it to the electrical hot plate.
However, this pot would be considered a first vessel after the water has been heated.
Blessings,
