Is it permissible for Sephardim to eat non-chalak chicken?

AA

Question

Hello and greetings, is it permissible for Sephardim to eat chicken that has rabbinical supervision but does not specify the word "chalak" or "glatt"?
And maybe if it is forbidden for adults, perhaps it is permissible for small children...
What should we do in a case where we receive this from charitable organizations for free?
Thank you very much

Answer

Hello,

The whole concept of "chalak" meat that Sephardim need to be particularly careful about applies specifically to beef, as explained in Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De'ah (Siman 39, Seif 10), and also see the responsa Yabia Omer, part 5 (part Yoreh De'ah, Siman 3). However, regarding chicken, this concept does not exist, and thus if there is a reliable kosher certification on the chicken, Sephardim can rely on it.

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
