Regarding Naming a Daughter Adel

AA

Question

Honorable Rabbi Shalom, my name is Racheli and, with blessing, I gave birth to a daughter on the 25th of Cheshvan at 1:04 PM. I would like to know the meaning of the name "Adel." Thank you and have a blessed day.

Answer

Greetings, The name Adel is suitable for a daughter, as it was the name the Baal Shem Tov, of blessed memory, gave to his daughter. It seems the meaning of the name is "noble" or "honored." However, if the name is uncommon in your environment and may seem somewhat unusual, it is highly recommended to also give her another name with which she will feel comfortable (as Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, of blessed memory, wrote in his book Taʾama D'Kra, page 178, note 31, citing Rabbi Chazon Ish, of blessed memory, who advised against giving somewhat unusual names so the child will not feel ashamed when grown). Wishing mazal tov and much nachas, Hillel Meirs
