Prayer and Blessings
Nusach of Eastern Communities or Spanish Rite
Question
Shalom,
Some websites distinguish prayer books into three nusachim: Ashkenaz, Eastern Communities (Edot HaMizrach), and Sfarad.
What is the difference between Edot HaMizrach and Sfarad?
If I am half Moroccan and half Iraqi, which nusach should I use?
Also, is this choice critical?
Thank you very much in advance.
Answer
Greetings and blessings,
The Sfarad nusach is the Hasidic nusach largely based on the Sfard rite according to the Arizal, but it is not entirely identical to Edot HaMizrach.
Moroccan and Iraqi Jews generally pray according to the Edot HaMizrach nusach. However, if you only have a Sfarad siddur or if you are a chazan in a synagogue that prays according to that nusach, you may pray according to the Sfarad nusach.
With blessing,
