When is it Forbidden to Recite Viddui During Kri'at Shema Al HaMitah?

AA

Question

Shalom Rabbi,

I would like to ask about the vidduy during Kri'at Shema al haMitah. I used to say the vidduy all the time, but recently I have stopped. Have I fulfilled my obligation during all the times I prayed without saying the vidduy? What are the specific times when it is not recited?

Thank you very much, may you merit to perform good deeds.

Answer

Hello and blessings,

Even on days when you did not say the vidduy, you fulfilled your obligation for Kri'at Shema al haMitah.

On joyful days, when we do not recite Tachanun in the synagogue either, such as Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh, the entire month of Nisan, and similar occasions. (The days on which Tachanun is not recited are detailed in the prayer book, before the Tachanun prayer). Also, at night, one who sleeps before midnight does not say the vidduy during Kri'at Shema al haMitah; for example, on the evening after Rosh Chodesh or after Shabbat until midnight, one does not say the vidduy during Kri'at Shema.

With blessings,
Menashe Ben Porat
