Is It Permissible to Give Tzedakah at Night?

AA

Question

Honorable Rabbi, is it permissible to give tzedakah at night, and does Yalkut Yosef address this, and in which section? Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings, see the summary in Kitzur Shulchan Aruch Yalkut Yosef (Yoreh Deah, Siman 287, Se'if 8) which states that it is permissible to give tzedakah at night. Regarding the opinion of the Arizal, may his merit protect us, he holds that one should not give tzedakah at night since it is a time of judgment in the world. The expression to give in the evening refers to when one prays while it is still daytime. In Sha'ar HaKavanot, it is explained that the primary time for giving tzedakah is during Shacharit, but during Mincha, which is also a time of judgment, it is not as essential as during Shacharit. Nevertheless, the Arizal would give tzedakah at Mincha but not at Ma'ariv. However, in general, one need not be stringent regarding this, and if one gives to the tzedakah box at night, they will receive a blessing from Hashem. Blessings, Hillel Meirs.
