Choosing a Name for a Daughter: Yael, Alma, Maya, Emma, and Aya
Question
We would appreciate your advice, esteemed Rabbi, regarding a name for a daughter - Yael, Alma, Maya, Emma, Aya. We are undecided.... Thank you very much!!
Answer
Greetings, The names Alma, Maya, Emma, and Aya are not recommended. In contrast, the name Yael is good and recommended. Sources: Regarding the name Aya, see the book "Shemot Ba’aretz" (page 181). Regarding the name Yael, see the book "Ma’ayan Omer," Part 12 (Chapter 1, Siman 26) in the name of HaGaon Rabbi Yosef, of blessed memory, and in the book "Yeshuot Mordechai" (page 118) in the name of HaGaon Rabbi Elyahu, of blessed memory. Also, in "Shemot Ba’aretz" (page 48), it is written in the name of HaGaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, that one may give the name Yael to a daughter, for it is from Tanach and was borne by a righteous woman. Blessings, Hillel Meirs
