Are the names Shilat and Sheina recommended for a girl?
Question
A baby girl was born to us, thankfully, on Monday morning, 12th of Shevat.
We wanted to know about the names Shilat or Sheina. Does the meaning of Shilat refer to "I have set Hashem before me always"?
Thank you very much for your help!!
Answer
Greetings, The names Shilat and Sheina are recommended for a girl. By way of an allusion, it is said that Shilat is an acronym for "I have set Hashem before me always." Sources: Regarding the name Shilat, see the book Yuchsin (under the letter Shin), which cites the Geonim in a responsum about Rabbi Shmuel bar Shilat; Shilat was the name of Rabbi Shmuel's mother, who was the sister of Rabbi Chiya. Although the book Yuchsin expresses a different opinion, the sefer Pri Tzaddik on Purim (under the letter Bet) wrote to reconcile the words of the Geonim. According to this, the name Shilat is appropriate for a girl. Likewise, in the book Yeshuot Mordechai (page 118), citing Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu ztz"l, and the book Shemot Ba'aretz (page 172) quoting Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky shlita, it is affirmed that it is possible to name a girl Shilat.
With blessings for good fortune and much joy, Hillel Meirs
