Is It Permissible to Read the Tanach at Night?
Question
Hello esteemed Rabbi, is it permissible to read the Tanach at night? Two verses in Hebrew and one in translation?
Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings,
1. In principle, there is no prohibition against reading the Tanach at night; however, according to Kabbalah, it is preferable to avoid reading the Tanach at night if this would displace the study of Torah Sheb'al Peh (Oral Torah). Yet if Torah study would be neglected otherwise, then even according to Kabbalah, it is permissible to read the Tanach at night to begin with.
2. Regarding the practice of two verses in Hebrew and one in translation, as mentioned, there is no prohibition according to halacha. However, Kabbalah advises against it unless one is reading with Rashi's commentary. It should also be noted that on Shabbat and Yom Tov, even according to Kabbalah, it is permitted to read the Tanach at night. (All of the above is based on what is written in Shut Yabia Omer, part 6, Orach Chaim, siman 30.)
