Until When May One Recite the Shehecheyanu on a New Garment?
Question
If I wear a new garment and forgot to say the "Shehecheyanu" blessing, am I permitted to recite it after two or three hours? Thank you.
Answer
Greetings, You may recite the Shehecheyanu blessing as long as you have not removed the garment since the first time you wore it (even after two or three hours). However, once you have removed the garment without the intention to put it on again immediately, you may no longer recite the blessing when you wear it a second time; in that case, you should recite the blessing without mentioning Hashem's Name.
Sources: See Lev HaChut Yair in his book Mikor Chaim (a summary of halachot, Siman 273, paragraph 4), who states that one may not recite the blessing after the first use. Also consult the Hagraz in Seder Birkat Hanenanim (chapter 12, paragraph 4) who writes that one may bless on the garment as long as it has not been removed, but if it was removed with the intention not to immediately wear it again but at a later time, one does not bless upon the second wearing. Likewise, see Chazon Ovadia Berachot (page 102, note 6) and Hilchot Shlomo, part 1, chapter 23, halacha 22. Blessings, Hillel Meirs
