Question

Is it permissible to eat a hard-boiled egg at a hotel abroad? Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings, It is not permitted to eat a hard-boiled egg at a hotel abroad without reliable kosher certification. Besides the fact that it is unknown in which vessel the egg was cooked, it is clear that a non-Jew cooked it, and the halacha explicitly forbids an egg that was cooked by a non-Jew. Sources: This is the wording of the Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah (siman 113, se'if 14): An egg, even if it is suitable to be eaten raw, if it was cooked by a non-Jew, is forbidden. The Taz (s.k. 14) explains that the egg is not considered like something eaten in its raw state, which would not have a prohibition of cooking by a non-Jew, because a raw egg is only eaten under extreme necessity. With blessings, Hillel Meirs
