Question

Hello, what is the "Nishmat Kol Chai" prayer and the "Shirat HaYam" prayer, and what are their spiritual benefits? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings! These prayers are printed in the siddur. Shirat HaYam is found in the daily Shacharit (morning prayer), and Nishmat Kol Chai appears in the Shacharit of Shabbat, following Shirat HaYam. In Menorat HaMaor, chapter 2, a prayer consisting of one hundred blessings states the recitation of Shirat HaYam and its great reward. As recorded in the Midrash, "Anyone who recites Shirat HaYam every day merits the World to Come." This is because one believes in Hashem and in the wonders He did for our ancestors, etc. We also find in the Midrash "Yehi Or" that when a person recites Shirat HaYam after the verses of praise, the congregation of Israel is adorned with the crown with which Hashem adorned the King Messiah, and upon these sacred letters engraved, Israel was adorned on the day Hashem split the Sea of Reeds for them and Pharaoh and his army drowned in it. Accordingly, one must focus his heart on this song every day, and whoever merits this will merit to see the face of the Messiah, through the rectification of that crown, measure for measure. If one recites Shirat HaYam every day and believes that Hashem redeemed His forefathers from Egypt, split the sea for them and led them through it on dry land while submerging their enemies, he will merit to see the days of the Messiah and the redemption when Hashem will redeem us from this exile. In the Maor VaShemesh on Parashat Beshalach, it is also said that "Whoever recites Shirat HaYam with intention and joy has all his sins forgiven," as stated in the holy Zohar. There is a tradition attributed to Rabbi Yehuda HaChasid that there is an obligation in times of distress to recite "Nishmat Kol Chai" after being saved, as a spiritual safeguard from future trouble. Wishing you success and blessing, Yaakov Moshe
