Vidui During Shema Before Sleep on Yom Kippur

Is it customary to recite vidui with the Shema before sleep on Yom Kippur?

AA

Question

On Yom Kippur, when reciting the Shema before going to sleep, is the confession (vidui) recited? Thank you very much.

Answer

Shalom, the confession (vidui) is indeed recited on Yom Kippur during the Shema before going to sleep. This is the practice in the 'Ish Matzliach' Machzor for Yom Kippur, and it applies even when Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat. However, if one has already recited the vidui within the preceding half hour, halacha forbids repeating the vidui again during that time period. (See Kaf Hachayim, Siman 1, Se'if 23 and Or Letziyon, Part B, Chapter 45, Section 44.) Gmar Chatimah Tovah, Hillel Meirs.
