Blessing Al HaMichya and Borei Nefashot
Question
Hello, when do we recite ma'ayn shalosh and when do we recite borei nefashot? I constantly confuse these (especially borei nefashot), and I don't bless because I am not always sure when to bless and I don't want there to be a blessing in vain. I would appreciate a clear and detailed answer.
Thank you.
Answer
Greetings,
A. The blessing of ma'ayn shalosh 'Al HaMichya' is recited after eating a portion of 27 grams or more from foods made from the five species of grain: wheat, barley, spelt, rye, and oats (of course, for bread, we recite Birkat HaMazon at the end).
B. The blessing of ma'ayn shalosh 'Al HaPeirot' is recited after eating a portion of 27 grams or more from fruits that are among the seven species.
C. The blessing of ma'ayn shalosh 'Al HaGefen' is recited after drinking a revi'it (81 ml) of wine.
D. The blessing borei nefashot is recited after eating a portion of 27 grams or more from fruits that are not among the seven species, vegetables, all types of foods whose first blessing is 'shehakol', and also after drinking 81 ml or more from any type of beverage (other than wine, as mentioned in item C).
Wishing you much success,
