Halachot and Customs
Is it permissible to use glass utensils for meat and dairy?
Question
If I use glass plates and bowls in my home and not porcelain, can I use them for both meat and dairy? If yes or no, why so?
Thank you
Answer
Greetings,
If you follow the Sephardic custom, you may use the same glass utensils for meat and dairy, but you must be careful to wash and scrub the utensils well between meat and dairy.
Regarding the Ashkenazi custom, there is a debate as to whether it is permissible to use glass utensils for meat and dairy, and in many places the custom has developed to be more stringent in this regard.
Sources:Regarding the Sephardic custom - see Responsa Yabia Omer, part 4 (Yoreh De'ah, section 5), and Hilchot Olam, part 1 (pages 275-277).
Regarding the Ashkenazi custom, there is a dispute about this, see Derek Teshuvah (section 181, subsection 2), and in many places the custom has spread to be more stringent, see Orachot HaBayit (chapter 7, section 6).
Sincerely,
