Brit Milah - What Are the Segulot?
Question
Hello, Rabbi. I am due to give birth in about a month, and already there are disagreements over a very specific matter regarding the brit milah.
My partner’s family wants the baby passed through too many hands, in my opinion.
I will explain:
They want me to pass him to my partner’s mother, who will pass him to my mother, who will pass him to my grandmother, who will pass him to my partner’s sister (single, without children), who will pass him to my partner, who will pass him to the sandak / mohel...
(This is after reducing it; they want a few more people.)
All of these handoffs are based on one claim: that there is a great segulah and blessing for health / a proper match / having children.
(I should note that my family, like my partner’s family, does not want this passing-from-hand-to-hand, because they also agree with me that it is dangerous and unnecessary.)
In my view, this is far too many hands, and of course I think things can go wrong.
This is a seven-day-old baby...
Is there really such a great segulah?
Is this an obligation?
Are there no other rituals, even within the brit ceremony, that can be done?
Thank you very much.
Answer
Hello and blessings.
The truth is that there is no real concern and no harm whatsoever in passing the baby from hand to hand, and there is in this a certain mitzvah and segulah, and there are those who regard it very highly; therefore, it is not כדאי to quarrel over it.
Success,
