Is the name Beeri good for a boy?
Question
Dear Rabbi, hello and blessings.
We were blessed with a son, and I wanted to know whether the name Beeri is a good and holy name?
Thank you very much, and may there be good news.
Answer
Greetings,
A boy may be named Beeri, and it is a good and holy name.
Sources: Beeri was the father of the prophet Hoshea, as stated in the Book of Hoshea (chapter 1, verse 1), and he was a prince of the Reubenites, as cited by the Metzudat David there. Likewise, in Sefer Shemot Baaretz (page 193), in the name of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky zt"l, Hoshea son of Beeri, even though Beeri is the name of a wicked man (the father of Esau's wife), [see Rashi to Isaiah 8:19, and Radak at the beginning of Hoshea] - wherever a person's name and his father's name are mentioned favorably, it is known that he is a righteous person, the son of a righteous person (see Tractate Megillah 15a).
With blessings of mazel tov and much nachas,
Hillel Meirs
