A Verse by Name

AA

Question

What does verse by name mean? Is it just a trend, or is there a segulah to say this verse? If so, when is it customary to recite the special verse?

Thank you, and good news.

Answer

Greetings and blessings.

A verse by name is a verse from the Tanach that begins and ends with the same letters with which the name begins and ends. This verse is recited at the end of the Shemoneh Esreh prayer before the verse Yihyu Leratzon Imrei Fi. The segulah of the verse was explained in the books: when the soul ascends above, it is first asked its name. If the soul does not remember its name [as a result of sins and the like], this is very unpleasant for it, and it suffers until it remembers its name. Therefore, for anyone who regularly recites the verse corresponding to his name, this is a segulah that the soul will not forget its name on the Day of Judgment.
