Halachot and Customs

Is it permitted to marry a cousin?

AA

Question

Hello Rabbi,

I have a cousin with whom I am very close, and we are told all the time that we are a good match. Is there any problem with marrying a cousin?

Thank you very much.

Answer

Hello,

According to halacha, it is permitted to marry a cousin (Shulchan Aruch, Even HaEzer 15:17), although very often there are genetic problems in such marriages that can lead the children to health problems. Therefore, one should consult with doctors whether this is advisable from a medical standpoint.

Blessing and success,
