Is It Halachically Permitted to Sleep with One's Feet Facing the Bedroom Door?

AA

Question

Hello,

Baruch Hashem, next month I am moving.

Is it advisable to arrange the room so that the bed is facing the door? The feet are close to the bedroom entrance. Thank you.

Answer

Hello,

There is no prohibition against sleeping with one’s feet facing the bedroom entrance; however, some are strict about this because that is the way a dead person is laid out.

Sources: See the responsum of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, zt"l, in Daas Notal Part I (page 109), and in Shemiras HaGuf VeHaNefesh Part II (page 215, beginning with the words And I was asked).

With wishes for a good settling-in,

Hillel Meirs
