Is there a kashrut issue with blueberries?
Question
Is there a problem with eating whole fresh blueberries?
Answer
Greetings and blessings.
Fresh Blueberries
The level of infestation in blueberries depends on the quality of the care they receive during cultivation. Therefore, it is very important to purchase blueberries specifically from reputable brands. In this case, the blueberries should be washed externally to remove any insects adhering to them. In order to rule out any unusual infestation, it is recommended to observe the berries while washing, cutting, and eating them. If a soft or rotten area is found, that section should be cut open and inspected.
Blueberries from lesser-known companies or from privately grown, untreated crops: Many insects may be present even inside the fruit. In this case, each berry must be opened before use, in addition to being washed externally.
If the blueberries are intended to be ground or blended, some authorities are lenient and permit a sample inspection by opening and checking the inside of nine berries taken from different parts of the batch. Afterward, the blueberries should be ground very finely and thoroughly.
