Do We Say Migdol in Birkat HaMazon on Chanukah?

AA

Question

Hello, honored rabbi:

Do we say "Migdol" in Birkat HaMazon on Chanukah? What is the reason, and why do we sometimes say Migdol and sometimes magdil in Birkat HaMazon?

Thank you very much, Rabbi.

Answer

Hello,

Only on a day on which there is Mussaf, such as Shabbat, Yom Tov, Chol HaMoed, and Rosh Chodesh, do we say "Migdol." However, there are those who say that even on Chanukah we say "Migdol," but the custom is to say "Magdil" (except for the two days of Rosh Chodesh that fall during Chanukah, on which we say "Migdol").

Sources: The Mishnah Berurah (siman 189, seif katan 5) writes that the practice is to say Migdol on Shabbat, Yom Tov, and Rosh Chodesh, and Magdil on an ordinary day. See there. In Ben Ish Hai (year 1, parashat Chukat, ot 19), he cites from the handwritten work Keter Malchut that even at the Purim meal one should say "Migdol," because of the special illumination revealed on that day, which is present throughout the entire day. See there. However, on Chanukah we say "magdil." Likewise, see Nitei Gavriel, Chanukah (chapter 48, note 27), which cites Responsa Mishne Sachir, part 2 (siman 200), that one should say "Migdol" on Chanukah, and he wrote regarding this: It seems that this is not the custom; rather, everything depends on the day on which Mussaf is recited.

Happy Chanukah,

Hillel Meirs
