Can a Woman Recite the Sheva Berachot?
Question
Hello, respected rabbi, can a woman recite the Sheva Berachot blessing, not under the chuppah?
Thank you
Answer
Hello,
A woman cannot recite a blessing among the Sheva Berachot.
Sources: As explained by the Rambam (Hilchot Berachot 2:9), slaves and minors cannot recite Birkat Chatanim. The Kesef Mishneh there wrote that it is self-evident, for if even joining them is not counted for something that requires ten, all the more so they cannot recite the blessing. The Maggid Mishneh explained likewise (Hilchot Ishut 10:5). The Beur HaGra on Even HaEzer (siman 62, seif 5) likewise wrote regarding the ruling in the Shulchan Aruch there, that slaves and minors do not recite this blessing, in these words: since they do not even join, as written in seif 4. End quote. Accordingly, since women do not join the quorum of ten men required for Birkat Chatanim, as the Ritva wrote in Ketubot (7b, s.v. lo), it is certainly necessary that there be ten adult men for Birkat Chatanim. This also appears from the words of the Shulchan Aruch, Even HaEzer (siman 62, seif 4). This is also explained in the Chasam Sofer on Ketubot there, s.v. bemikhalot. Therefore, all the more so they cannot take part in these blessings. See also Rabbeinu Menachem and the Hagahot Me'at Tzari on the Rambam, Hilchot Berachot there. The same ruling on this matter was given in responsa Chavat Binyamin, part 2 (siman 80), responsa Mashber Yam (siman 85), by HaGaon Rav Shmuel Wosner zt"l in Sefer Shivat Shemchot (chapter 4, note 70), by HaGaon Rav Zalman Nechemia Goldberg zt"l in responsa Bimareh HaBazak, part 5 (pages 185-186), and in responsa Bnei Banim, part 3 (siman 27). This is also further explained in responsa Briti Shalom, part 7 (expanded edition, siman 20, letter b). See also Sefer Chochmat Gershon (pages 165-167).
With blessings, Hillel Meirs
