The Gemara writes in Tractate Shabbat, daf 89a: What is Mount Sinai? It is the mountain upon which hatred descended upon the nations of the world. And in a fuller explanation in Pesikta Zutarta (Lecha Tov), Shemot, Parashat Yitro, chapter 19, verse 18: And Sinai. Why is it called Sinai? Because hatred descended from it upon the idol worshippers, who are jealous of Israel for their Torah.
