Is There a Source Not to Whistle at Home?
Question
Hello, honored rabbi, is there a halachic, Torah, or Jewish source for the common belief that one should not whistle at home?
Thank you.
Answer
Hello,
To the best of my knowledge, there is no source indicating concern specifically about whistling inside the home. In the book Shabbat beShabbato (page 327), he cited what he heard in his childhood: that one who whistles causes demons to come, and that he found no source for this. See there also what else he wrote on the matter. See further what is written about this in Responsa Maaseh Afud, part 1 (siman 100).
In any case, some have written that this is not proper conduct to whistle - see the book Orchot Shabbat, part 2 (chapter 29, note 60) in the name of the Chazon Ish zt"l, and the book Yalkut Yosef (siman 338, seif 9). See also the book Maaseh Ish, part 1 (pages 167-168).
With blessing,
Hillel Meirs
