Regarding Women and Affixing a Mezuzah

AA

Question

Is a woman permitted to affix a mezuzah?

Thank you

Answer

Shalom u-vrachah,

A woman may also affix a mezuzah. There is no need for the presence of any man. Only if the mezuzah is being affixed in a large gathering is it not in keeping with modesty for a woman to affix the mezuzah.

Sources: This is also ruled in Shevet HaLevi, vol. 2 (siman 158, ot 3), that a woman may also affix a mezuzah. Likewise, this appears to be the conclusion of Yabia Omer, vol. 3 (Yoreh Deah, siman 18, ot 3). It is also stated explicitly in his work Halichot Olam, vol. 8 (page 216). It is also cited in the name of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, of blessed memory, in the work Ashrei Haish, Yoreh Deah part 2 (chapter 64, section 7).

Regarding what was written, that she should not affix a mezuzah in the presence of unrelated men, see a similar case in Mishnah Berurah (siman 271, small seif katan 4).

With blessing,

Hillel Meirs
