Why is the name Ari not recommended for a boy?

AA

Question

Hello, esteemed Rabbi,
We are pleased to announce the birth of our son, and the circumcision will take place this coming Sunday, G-d willing.
My husband and I love the name Yaakov Ari and are unable to connect with any other name.
You mentioned to me that the name Ari is not particularly recommended; could you please explain why?
Thank you in advance,
Koral

Answer

Hello,

The reason is that this name does not have a source in Judaism, and it is a new name that has not been traditionally used throughout the generations. Furthermore, we have not found a great Rabbi well-versed in names who would recommend this name. However, you can name him at the circumcision Yaakov Aryeh, and practically call him Yaakov Ari.

Sources: See Shemot Baaretz (page 167) in the name of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky Shlit"a.

With blessings for congratulations and much joy,

Hillel Meirs
