Until When Can One Make Kiddush on Friday Night?
Question
What is the maximum time between lighting Shabbat candles and making Kiddush? Thank you!!
Answer
Greetings,
Ideally, one should make Kiddush immediately after returning home from the Evening Prayer on Friday night (see Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 271:1, and Mishnah Berurah there).
However, if one does not have an appetite, they may wait to make Kiddush, since they have already mentioned Shabbat in their prayer at the synagogue (Mishnah Berurah there. It is also noted there that in any case, if waiting will lead to a disruption of peace in the home or if there are guests or servants at home, especially a poor guest, one should not delay making Kiddush just because they want to fulfill the mitzvah in a more ideal manner).
In any case, if one has delayed making Kiddush for whatever reason, they can still make Kiddush the entire night until dawn.
Blessings,
