Saying Shema on the Bed
Question
Hello honored Rabbi, should one say the Shema on the bed while sitting or lying down? Thank you very much
Answer
Dear Sir,
According to the law, it is permissible to recite the Shema on the bed while lying completely on one’s side. However, it is forbidden to recite it while lying on one’s back or stomach. It is preferable to say the Shema on the bed while standing or sitting, so that one can focus properly and also to avoid falling asleep in the middle (see Mishnah Berurah, Orach Chaim 241:6, Sha'ar HaTziyun 241:21, and Halachah Berurah there, section 3).
And the vidui (confession, according to the custom of the Sephardim) should be said while standing - see this link.
