Is it permissible for a man to wear a wedding ring?

Question

Hello and blessings, I would like to ask about the issue of a wedding ring for a man. Is it permissible for a man to wear a wedding ring? I have seen some say it is allowed and others say it is prohibited. I would appreciate it if I could receive the opinion of Maran Rabbi Ovadia z"l if he ruled on this matter (or even from the Shulchan Aruch), or Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef shlit"a. And if possible, I would be very grateful for the source. Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings,

It is prohibited for a woman to give a wedding ring to a man at the time of the wedding ceremony and sanctification for several clear reasons, as thoroughly explained in the responsa Igrot Moshe, part Even HaEzer, part 3 (siman 18). However, after the wedding, if he wishes to wear a special ring for men, there is no prohibition in this.

Sources: This is also stated in the book Pe'at Zekenim (page 120) in the name of Rabbi Nissim Karelitz shlit"a. Similarly, Rabbi Meir Mazuz shlit"a holds this in the responsa Beit Ne'eman, part 1 (part Even HaEzer, siman 3, paragraph 37). See also in Igrot Moshe, part Even HaEzer, part 4 (siman 32, paragraph 2) and in the book Sha'arei Halacha u'Minhag (part Yoreh De'ah, siman 39) and in the book Or LeTzion, part 2 (chapter 23, paragraph 11) and in the book Menchat Chaim (page 143).

Blessings,

Hillel Meirs
