Does breaking a glass symbolize good luck?

AA

Question

Hello, recently (yesterday and today) I accidentally hit a glass full of water and broke it. Is this a coincidence or perhaps a sign? Does a broken glass symbolize good luck?

Answer

Hello and blessings

The common custom is that whenever a vessel breaks in the house, even without a cause related to marriage or the like, one announces loudly "Mazel Tov." Rabbi Yisachar Dov, the Av Beit Din of Busk, wrote in his book Oitzer Yad HaChaim (section 92) that this is not to be dismissed lightly, and it is indeed a good sign. There is a trustworthy source for this in the Shita Mekubetzet (Mai'ilah 17b, as printed on the Vilna Shas page) regarding the story it recounts about the demon Ben Tamlion who clung to the daughter of the emperor. He said to Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai that when he leaves her, all glass vessels in the house will break; refer to that source.

Wishing you success - Menashe Yisrael
